About
Oxford House on Derbyshire Street has been part of Bethnal Green since 1884, when it opened as the first Settlement House — graduates from Keble College, Oxford living on site and volunteering their time against urban poverty, running youth clubs, a mutual loan society and legal advice. It stopped being residential in the late 1970s and turned the bedsits over to offices and community projects; today it describes its work as "building harmonious and creative communities in Bethnal Green".
A 2004 expansion added Oh! Arts, with a 120-seat studio theatre, dance studio and gallery space, and a 2019 refurbishment brought a new entrance, café and restored chapel. Alongside the classes, exhibitions and open mic nights, the building hosts campaigning and community film screenings.
