The Roof Gardens

The Roof Gardens occupy an acre and a half on top of the former Derry & Toms department store on Kensington High Street, laid out by landscape architect Ralph Hancock between 1936 and 1938. Three themed gardens sit up there — a Moorish Spanish Garden modelled on the Alhambra, a Tudor Garden of archways and wisteria, and an English Water Garden with a stream, a pond and resident flamingos. The gardens are listed, as are the buildings around them.

Open to the public for much of their history and run by Virgin until 2018, they reopened in 2024 as a private members' club spread over three floors, with restaurants, bars and a programme of events for members and their guests.
