Windrush International Caribbean Film Festival

The Windrush International Caribbean Film Festival grew out of the UK’s Windrush Caribbean Film Festival, founded by filmmaker Frances-Anne Solomon of the CaribbeanTales Media Group. The idea came from touring her own film “HERO: Inspired by the Extraordinary Life and Times of Mr. Ulric Cross” to more than fifty sold-out UK screenings, where audiences kept recognising their own family histories in what they were watching. It sets out to engage and educate audiences about the contributions of the Windrush generation, and programmes for schools and community centres as readily as for cinemas.

The 2026 edition is the first to run internationally, connecting the United Kingdom, Canada and Trinidad & Tobago under the banner “Changing the Game” — celebrating the filmmakers, athletes, women and cultural pioneers who, as Solomon puts it, “entered spaces that had been closed to them”. The London programme is co-presented with Black History Walks and the BFI’s African Odysseys, and runs from a Sir Horace Ové celebration in late September through to the end of October.
